Alex Rudolph is a Santa Fe-based mixed media artist who crafts intricate, sculptural, multi-layered contemporary shadowboxes. Through hand-crafted framing and intentional lighting, he masterfully manipulates shadow and depth to create immersive visual environments that evoke curiosity and wonder.
Artist Statement:
"To me, Pee-wee Herman defined Saturday mornings—representing a world of open possibility, absurdist self-expression, and a vital reminder to just be yourself. As an adult, I have a much deeper appreciation for what Paul Reubens gave us, knowing how he shielded his true self to build an immersive character that broadcasted messages of pure self-love to our generation for years. This piece is a direct homage to Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, featuring the iconic X-Ray Spex gag, a map of San Antonio, Texas, and his classic red bow tie. Nodding to the character's early punk rock associations, Pee-wee's portrait is stylized in a photocopied halftone gradient, with each element meticulously layered to create a sculptural 3D environment that celebrates his enduring creative legacy."
