Watercolor, Gouache
8”x8”
Brandon Esparza is a local queer multidisciplinary artist born and raised in Oxnard, California. His practice spans watercolor, gouache, acrylic, oil paint, and digital media, exploring the queer experience, the natural world, and imaginative narratives shaped by intuition and curiosity.
Artist Statement:
"When thinking about the direction for this piece, I immediately wanted to capture the maximalist style of the show by packing in as many Playhouse characters and set elements as possible. Pee-wee has always been a comforting presence in my life. Growing up, I watched Pee-wee’s Big Adventure more times than I can count. Later in high school, I rediscovered Pee-wee’s Playhouse on Adult Swim; its joy and absurdity became an unexpected medicine during years when I felt like an outcast and misunderstood by my peers. Learning in adulthood that Paul Reubens was also a queer artist who navigated the world during such a difficult era was just another validation of how deeply special his legacy will always be to me."
