Kate’s extensive illustration credits include And the Bullfrogs Sing (a Bank Street Best Book of the Year), The Dirt Book (a New York Public Library Best Book of the Year and Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List selection), A Tree Is a Community, and her latest book, My Pollinator Garden, which is a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection and an ALSC/ALA Notable Book. With pencil-smudge fingers, Kate is usually hiding out with a few pet earthworms in her slightly haunted art studio.
Artist Statement:
" Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is my all-time favorite film. I was very little when my parents let my big sister and me see it in the theater twice—which was definitely not something normally allowed in our house. My sister and I have used his voice to exchange movie quotes for our entire lives. Growing up, I didn't just want to watch Pee-wee; I wanted to be Pee-wee.
In a twist of fate, on my first date with my now-husband, he told me his favorite movie was Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. This is literally the only reason I married him. Just kidding… kinda."
