Chain stitched thread on scrim felt
3”x 4”
Second Rodeo Stitching (S. Moxy Moczygemba) brings together vintage technology and contemporary charm to create unique chain stitch embroidery in Gainesville, Florida. Using an 80-year-old, hand-guided machine to "paint with thread," she crafts distinct pieces inspired by pop culture, nature, and tattoo traditionalism. Many Second Rodeo pieces are intentionally small and accessible, ensuring that even burgeoning art enthusiasts can acquire one-of-a-kind, handmade works.
Artist Statement:
"Pee-wee and his expansive universe of vibrant misfits are nothing short of a core childhood memory. The sights, shapes, and sounds of the Playhouse stood out from all other television programming of the era, representing a world where it was entirely acceptable to be a quirky individual, so long as you remained curious and kind. My love for Pee-wee never ended; as I grew older, I deeply appreciated learning about the legendary creatives who helped build that world, from Mark Mothersbaugh to Tim Burton. I'll never forget the first time I watched a recorded-off-the-TV VHS copy of the HBO special, and despite the tragic, unjust derailing of Paul Reubens' career, I always found joy in seeing him shine in non-Pee-wee roles, like Mystery Men.
When I learned about this tribute show, I was bursting with ideas. One of the primary motivators of my work is keeping pieces affordable, so choosing a smaller scale for this tribute was important to me. At the end of the day, nothing visually represents Pee-wee more than his signature bowtie. Memento Pee-wee is a small physical reminder of the character Paul Reubens spent his life sharing with us, featuring a clean white background and grey frame intended to evoke the totality of his iconic suit look."
