Artist Statement:
"When I learned about Evolved Art Gallery’s Pee-wee tribute exhibition, creating this piece felt like a celebration of a world that has shaped me for most of my life. Growing up in the late 1980s, my mom and I watched Pee-wee’s Playhouse religiously, and playing with her toy set forms some of my favorite childhood memories.
Rather than recreating a single scene, I imagined a dreamlike desert landscape filled with hidden references for fellow fans to discover. The hidden glowing eyes that emerge in the dark hint at the mysterious imagination Pee-wee inspired. An embedded 1986 penny commemorates the show's debut year while serving as a nod to Penny, the claymation character—and by pure chance, it was the very first coin I pulled from a jar while planning this piece.
What has always resonated with me about Pee-wee is his childlike resilience, boundess curiosity, and sense of humor in the face of any obstacle. His stories reminded us that imagination is a strength and that delight can be found in the most unexpected places. This painting is lovingly dedicated to my mom—we never quite outgrew the Playhouse."
