This is a truly one-of-a-kind piece of television and pop-culture history. Hand-carved by Tiki Tony, this piece is a meticulous, screen-accurate replica of the iconic tiki featured from Season 2 onward on Pee-wee’s Playhouse.
A few weeks before the star-studded Netflix Is A Joke 40th Anniversary Special for Pee-wee’s Playhouse, the show's art director reached out to Tiki Tony to commission this incredible piece for the stage. Rented directly to Netflix for the event, it stood proudly on stage alongside Paul Reubens’ closest friends, cast members, and celebrity guests.
Artist Statement & Backstory:
"My connection to Pee-wee goes back to 1989, when my mom found a suit at a thrift store on Main Street in Ventura and hemmed it so I could look just like him. Decades later, I was lucky enough to actually meet Paul, and we became friends. (I even pinned a story about this tiki and my friendship with Paul on my Instagram, including one of the deeply treasured personal videos he sent to his friends during the last year of his life).
Paul and I had actually exchanged emails about the original show tiki back in the early 2000s when it came up for auction—we both missed the bidding, and it hilariously sold for only about $300. I had always wanted to carve one for him, but I never did. A year or so before he passed, we talked on the phone for an hour about designing some custom aloha shirts and merchandise for his website, but I was so paralyzed with excitement that I never pushed it forward.
So, when the call came from the Netflix art director to build this for the anniversary special, I didn’t hesitate. I didn’t think—I just started carving. I rented the piece to Netflix specifically so I could ensure it came back home to me. It means the world to me, and seeing it up on that stage a few months ago surrounded by the people who loved him was an unforgettable moment."
